About Our Club
According to the late Mr F. Gower, golf was played in Millicent in 1904 on a course which started "opposite the old showgrounds in Mr. Skewe's paddock, continued across a water course near Bellingers over Williams Road, south to Wyrie Road, over the drain to Newbery's, back across the drain toward Mt. Gambier Road, over the road toward Woodgreen, with the 9th hole opposite (where Turner's roadhouse is now situated).
A Golf club as such was formed in 1907 with Mr H.G.Hastings as Secretary and a committee consistign of Messrs. E.W Skitch, S. Tonge, F. Gower and L. Jefferson. This course of 2,800 yards extended through paddocks belonging to Messrs. Gordon and Boase.

In 1908 the Venue shifted to Mr E.J.Harris's private course which was possibly the originalone used in 1904.
Another club was formed in 1912 with the first hole being in the Convent School Grounds.
In 1930 a move to a portion of "Mayurra" where Mr and Mrs Edwards became Honorary Members. Two holes extended onto Mr George Osborne's land.
Mr Ivor William's property at Millicent North was used for the 1935 season, the old Stables being used as the clubrooms.
The new course at the Millicent Race Course was officially opened in April, 1936.

The Millicent Golf Course at Mt Burr was officially opened on the 26th of August, 1961.
The club had decided to move out near Mt Burr for the real country and natural bush like area, 12 Kilometers out of the township of Millicent where it was re-shaped and re-designed by architect Lance Beale. Jim Watts wrote about his experience in the Building & Construction of the new Millicent Golf Club at Mt Burr. Click here to view his story.
Our course has rich green fairways, bordered by a wide range of trees and natural scrub. Our superb greens are the fastest you will find in the South-East, which will add an interesting challenge for you to conquer in your game of golf.
Our Course has an ACR Rating of 71 and was ranked as the 80th best country Golf Club in Australia. Our Course is a nice length of 6,011 meters with a total par of 72 for the men & ladies. We have 4 Par 5’s, the 1st, 7th, 10th and the 14th holes.

The Millicent Golf Course was rebuilt after is as nearly destroyed by the disasterous Ash Wendsday bush fires in 1983. The ferocious fires burnt through the course destroying all in its path, leaving the entire course blackend and burnt. Only the Clubhouse was spared. However, the Club rebuilt the course to what a fantastic course it is today. Its length is 6,011 metres and with a Par 72 it is a delight to play. Although set on undulating land, the tranquil and aesthtic setting makes for an enjoyable stop and testing round of Golf. |
